獨立動畫短片 “看我 Look At Me"
Look At Me is a 2D animation short depicts the alienated relationship of the modern city. The story is about a man who wants to get people’s attention, but he is constantly being ignored. Every time he feels isolated and lonely, parts of his body become transparent. The man needs to find a way out before he completely lost himself.
I focus on revealing the subtle problems of modern society, political and cultural experience, which most of people feel existing values are normal. In my work, I deconstruct and reproduce the public familiarly visual icons to tell satirically metaphorical stories. This way of storytelling is between conceptual and practical. I always balance aesthetics and pleasure.
That is, In our society everyone wants others’ attention, but everyone talks and nobody listens. When the Internet and smartphones came out, it became worse. When we chase our desire, which is rapidly magnified, we will all live in a state anxiousness and feel vacant. The more we want, the more emptiness we receive.
This is my first time completing a 2D frame-by-frame animation, so it really means a lot to me. The most interesting but painful part for me was creating the story. The story is the core of the animation. A good story can make people laugh or cry. A good story causes viewers to reflect on their own experiences. The challenge was that I needed to condense the classic story arc, typically used in feature films, to 5 minutes.
I especially enjoyed animating because visualization is my strength. I tried many different illustration styles, color palettes, and character designs. The process of creating visuals was very instinctive for me. I was lucky that my story fits perfectly with my illustration style.
我選擇Adobe Photoshop作為創作逐格動畫的工具。主要的原因是他擁有龐大的筆刷資料庫，是最不同於Adobe Flash的地方，更能客製化自己的筆刷滿足創作風格的需要。作品中我運用到了鉛筆、蠟筆、與水彩筆刷。同時也很容易與其他Adobe系列軟體整合使用。
儘管這部短片主要運用手繪動畫，在特效方面不是很重要的部分。為了提升逐格動畫品質，我仍然運用了粒子效果、景深、與最後的調光。主要使用Adobe After Effects。
I used Adobe Photoshop for cel animation. The main reason was the rich selection from its brush library. Unlike Adobe flash, one can also customize one’s own brush to fit a drawing style.; for example, pencil brushes, crayon brushes, or even watercolor brushes. It was easy to control and manage time with other Adobe suite.
Even though this short film was mostly produced using hand draw animation, the special effects did not play a huge role in my film. To increase the picture quality of the frame-by-frame style, I still needed to apply some special effects, such as particles, depth of field, and final color correction. The main software used was Adobe After Effects.
Hui Kai is a motion artist and designer born in Taipei and currently based in Brooklyn, NY as freelancer. Several years’ experience of film and print in Taiwan led him to pursue a Master’s degree in animation. He graduated from Pratt Institute in Digital Arts with a concentration in Animation and Motion Arts. Kai is always thinking and observing the world then he reflects on his works. He specialized in style frames, main titles, UI design, and broadcast packaging.
